Al-Hamadani 944 és1001 között kezdte el megépíttetni a citadellát. Hamadani volt akkor a legjobb uralkodó és ő tette meg Aleppót 944-ben Szíria északi fővárosává. Az arabok Aleppót csak Haleb néven hívják. Bem József is eljutott Aleppóba, ott később aleppói basa lett.
